Intel Mac :: Erase Hard Drive Mac OS X (LION) 'Couldn't Unmount Disk'

Apr 15, 2012

I've just transferred my data to a new computer and now need to erase the hard drive on my old one. I've tried Disk Utility, increased the security, and tried 'erase' but I keep getting an error message 'couldn't unmount disk'. I've gone into Partitions and tried deleting the HD there as well but I get the same message. I just want to get the computer securely wiped and would like to keep Lion as the operating system.

Hardware :: Unable To Reapair External Disk / Unmount Error

Jun 22, 2008

I have a Western Digital 500gb external hard drive, with 2 partitions, 'KAINARC' and 'JUNGLEMAC', connected to my Intelmac (Tiger 10.4.11 via my firewire, i have connected via usb but the problem is still the same). I may have shut down the drive improperly to cause this situation.
KAINARC now appears on my desktop, but the partition of JUNGLEMAC does not. I go to disk utility and both partitions are visable, KAINARC is mounted but JUNGLEMAC is not. I cannot mount JUNGLEMAC.
When i try to verify and repair the partition I get the message:
Verify and Repair disk JUNGLEMAC
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 non HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
So I try to verify and repair the partition KAINARC but get this message:
Verify and Repair disk KAINARC
Repairing disk failed with error Could not unmount disk
So I have opened diskwarrior (unbelievably long time to start up and scan disks) in the hope of fixing the hard drive, but when i try to repair I get the error message 'unable to unmount KAINARC'.
I have tried other repair/recover programs but get the same message: 'Could not unmount disk KAINARC'. Im asuming that to fix the hard drive it has to be able to unmount KAINARC.

Oct 4, 2009

I tried to install Snow Leopard.
I got the error, 'The contents of this disk can't be changed. Mac OS X couldn't be installed on this disk.'
I restarted, to boot from the startup disk, not the CD.
And now it just goes to the grey screen and shuts off.
Pressing 'C' or 'Opt - Command - P - R' or holding down the Power button for a while and then restarting, or trying 'Command - V'... none of it works.
The machine just goes to the grey screen, the wheel spins, and it turns off.

OS X Mavericks :: Unable To Repair Or Unmount Disk To Reformat

Jun 20, 2014

I have a Macbook pro 17' (2011) running Mavericks with a Crucial 960Gb SSD and a 750Gb WDC in the optical bay. My ssd is divided into 710 Gb to OS X and 182 Gb to Windows 7 Bootcamp. All was well until the other day when the OS X partition failed to boot. I got the grey screen and the very slow progress bar which after 15 minutes powered the machine off. The Bootcamp partion continues to work without issues. I booted from an install disk and ran disk utility. The OS X partition appears greyed out on the left panel. I attempt a repair disk and after a 15 minute delay it says it is unable to repair the last action being 'updating boot support partitions for the volume as required'. Its all backed up regularly on time machine but when I boot an install usb and attempt to restore from time machine, the OSX disk does not appear as an option. I go back into disk utility and attemp to erase/repartition the disk to start a new install but it refuses to unmount. I appear to be running out of options,

OS X :: Couldn't Eject External, Now Disk Not Mounting?

Aug 15, 2009

I know this has been disccused ad nausium many places, but in reading 100s of posts Ive just confused myself and was hoping someone could help me make sense of all I've heard.I have a ibook g4 and use a WD 500gb external hard drive to keep all my music/pictures etc.Last night when I was moving files around (I dont think it was actually in the process of transferring files when this occurred, but there is a slight chance it was) I accidently hit enter instead of shift which told my computer to open all of the 1000+ folders that I had selected (DOH!) after working for an hour it seemed to be all frozen so with concern I turned the computer off and restarted.Suprise suprise, my external will no longer mount. - Disk Utility recognizes it but says there was an error on exit.Tim

PowerPC :: Hard Drive Not Working / Repair Volume Failed Could Not Unmount Disk

Jul 17, 2009

So so annoyed right now. Today my 12' G4 powerbook started to become slow, lots of spinning wheel, delayed menus etc. I checked file permissions, rebooted and it just kept on getting slower. Eventually it wouldn't get past the white apple screen.
I booted off the Tiger DVD and ran disk utility to fix and repair permissions again. It wouldn't let me repair the disk as I kept getting this error:
'Repair volume failed with error could not unmount disk'
I had to reboot again, and eventually my hard disk no longer appears in Disk Utility. I tried to boot into safe mode and get this:
'I0ATAController device blocking bus
I0ATAController device blocking bus
I0ATAController device blocking bus
I0ATAController device blocking bus
I0ATAController device blocking bus'
So now I pretty much can't do anything with it. Failed Hard Drive?

Jun 26, 2010

I have been using a Samsung ML-1630 printer for awhile, love it, etc. etc. Anyway, it ran out of ink a month or so ago, and I finally got around to buying a new cartridge.
I installed the cartridge fine, and the printer itself printed a test page just fine. The problem is anything I try and print gives me this: 'error: couldn't create gray colorspace.'
No matter what I try and print - word docs, emails, etc. etc. I can't figure out what it might be. Googling that error message came up with nothing.

Windows On Mac :: Partition Error - Back Up Disk And Use Disk Utility To Format

Mac Usb Unable To Unmount Volume For Repair Disk

Oct 9, 2010

I had windows vista installed but suddenly the audio decided to become faulty, after spending a day trying to fix it i realized I have a windows 7 install disc so i might as well just replace vista with windows 7. I didnt take care of vista or ever register it so it became quite a task to upgrade so i just deleted the partition and went to create a new one and just do a full install of windows 7.
I made the partition but the wrong format, so i removed it through boot camp assistant and created another, except now it keeps giving me the 'back up the disk and use disk utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using boot camp assistant again' Now, I'd love to do this, except I have no idea what I'm doing and WHY this error has occured. After becoming frustrated I switched from my imac to my macbook pro and received the same error when trying to create a partition. So any help on exactly what I need to do would be a HUGE help. I only use windows for music production (I know, seems backwards, but I use Sony Acid and FL Studio so I'm stuck with Windows)

OS X :: Disk Utility To Verify Disk Ends With Error?

May 10, 2010

I'm running OSX 10.4.11 on a 12' PowerBook 1.5 GHz with 1.25 GB of RAM and an 80 GB HD.
When I run the disk Utility to Verify Disk, it ends with the message, 'Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.' This happens if I run the Disk Utility from the hard drive, from the OSX installation disk or from an external hard drive.
The Repair Drive button is always grayed out no matter where I am running the disk Utility from, too.
So far, I haven't had any other unusual things with the operation, but I'm concerned that this could be an early warning of problems to come.
Has anyone else had this problem or have a clue?
I have cloned the entire hard drive onto an external drive with Carbon Copy Cloner. I know PPC systems won't boot from a USB drive, but I was considering booting from the install disk, re-formatting the drive from there and then re-installing from the external by running CCC from there. I hope someone will have a direct solution to repairing the drive without doing all of that.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Error With Disk Utility When Repairing Disk

Jun 26, 2012

I just got my computer yesterday and when running the 'repair disk' function, I already get an error! Since I used migration assistant to move everything off my old mac to my new mac, I'm not interested in reinstalling the whole OS and transffering all my files again. This is a new computer, and shouldn't have this problem this early. I also get the same result when starting up in the recovery partition. How do I resolve this?
Info:
MacBook Pro with Retina display, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

You can't risk sawing off the tree limb you are standing on.

Your Mac will not Repair:

Game 197: march 30 2018 the initials game 6. • The Boot drive

• A drive with Open files on it

the solution for drives with open files is to do a restart and do not re-open old Applications. The solution for the boot drive is to use Recovery_HD as the 'place to stand' and run the version of Disk Utility from there. (this means you are no longer booted from the Mac OS X partition, and the regular boot Volume is then free for full repair.)

If the drive passes Verify, it does not need to be repaired.
